It’s National Pi Day as originally founded by the Exploratorium and physicist Larry Shaw in San Francisco in 1988. However, since then it has evolved and grown to today where the Global community recognizes today as the International Day of Mathematics. The above graphic immediately demonstrates one reason why this is relevant: SEARCH! Do you have a “Pi Day” campaign? Clearly, we do.

Let me explain some aspects of this; my brother is the ‘bright’ one in the family. He excelled at math and very much influenced the bell curve (gratuitous mathematical term number one) in our family. The good news is he is three years younger than me but four years behind me in school (thank you Mom!) so I was pretty much already beyond the limit of the integral (gratuitous mathematical term number two). In other words, I had already graduated high school before he entered which prevented any direct correlation. Whoops, that’s kind of a marketing term but also a mathematical term, you begin to see why this all matters to us.

Mathematics relevance to marketing

As we continued to age, my brother and I grew closer and our paths became more defined. In terms of the Euclidean distance formula (gratuitous mathematical term number three) and an awesome pivot table our points of interest began to intersect. This is very VERY relevant in search. And quite honestly, ‘search’ is all encompassing. We only subscribe to email newsletters because they contain topics of interest to us aka, things we search. Marketing Automation and AI are ‘searching’ our wealth of knowledge only to organize, categorize, and segment our knowledge. Segment = equals another mathematical and marketing term overlap, doesn’t it? In sum (yeah, now I’m just abusing the concept!), take it from the communications major, math will show up in the strangest of places. Even sometimes, at dinner with your 9 year old grand-daughter discussing how multiplication and division can be demonstrated in Pies…
